"New cuts to Medicare treatment may cost me my life."

My doctor just told me that he can no longer provide IVIG (intravenous immunoglobulin) treatment, which I had been receiving every two weeks as part of my Medicare benefits. Without this treatment, I can’t go anywhere. I will basically be homebound for fear of picking up an infection. Because I have diabetes and limited immunity, my overall condition can quickly suffer if I get sick. Basically, one thing just leads to another, things just snowball.

I’ve heard that U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt is reviewing a recommendation to declare the situation to be a public health emergency in an effort to get the physician reimbursement for IVIG increased. But I’m anxious about how long I’ll have to go without IVIG treatment. Stress is one of the worst things for an immune deficient person. Not knowing where your next treatment is going to come is much more likely to make my condition worse. And if I can not get the treatment covered or find another alternative, it could cost me my life.

We need to let our family… friends… decision makers… know just how dangerous these types of changes to Medicare really are.
